Roll Curvature and Vertical Gear Effect

Bulge gets most of the attention because side-to-side misses are the ones players notice on the scorecard. Roll, the vertical curvature, is doing just as much work.

Roll is bulge's counterpart on the vertical axis — the curve running from the crown edge of the face down to the sole edge, rather than from heel to toe. Like bulge, it's built to manage gear effect, but the effect it's correcting for shows up as a change in launch angle and spin rate rather than sidespin.

What Happens on a High or Low Strike

A strike high on the face tends to launch the ball higher and with less spin than a center strike at the same swing. A strike low on the face does the opposite — lower launch, more spin, often described as a "sky" in reverse when it's severe enough. Both effects come from the same vertical gear effect that horizontal mis-hits produce sideways.

Left unmanaged, a low strike with excess spin can balloon and lose significant carry distance, while a high strike with too little spin can knuckle through the air with poor stability. Roll curvature is built specifically to soften both extremes.

Roll Radius and Why It's Usually Different From Bulge

Roll radius is measured the same way as bulge — a curvature radius, typically in a similar range — but manufacturers rarely set roll and bulge to the same number even on the same head. The vertical strike distribution among golfers tends to be narrower than the horizontal distribution, since swing plane consistency affects vertical strike location differently than face-to-path timing affects horizontal strike location. That asymmetry is part of why the two curvatures are engineered separately.

A driver's roll curvature is doing quiet, constant work on every mis-hit above or below center, even on shots that never show up as a side-to-side miss.

Where This Shows Up in Real Fittings

Players who describe inconsistent carry distance despite a repeatable swing path are frequently dealing with vertical strike variance rather than a swing flaw. We see this often with players who tee the ball at an inconsistent height round to round, since tee height is one of the biggest drivers of where on the face the ball actually makes contact.

Checking Roll During a Fitting

We track vertical strike location the same way we track horizontal location during strike mapping, using impact tape across a full bucket. If vertical dispersion turns out to be wider than horizontal dispersion for a given player, roll curvature gets weighted more heavily in the head comparison than it would for a player with tight vertical strikes but a wider horizontal spread.

Roll curvature rarely gets asked about by name, but it's a real, measurable spec that affects carry consistency on any strike that lands off the vertical center of the face — which, for most players, is more often than they'd guess.
